A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

The readings of today build on the strength of Christians, strength
based on faith, for without it the words in the gospel of St. Matthew
are frightening, "Behold I send you as sheep in the midst of wolves"
and "they will deliver you up in councils and scourge you in their
synagogues". (Matthew 10:16-17) St. Matthew emphasizes that we are
not to worry in advance "for it shall be given you in that hour what
to speak" and also that we persevere for "he that shall persevere
unto the end, he shall be saved". (Matthew 10:19-22) The Genesis
narrative of Joseph sold into Egypt by his family, his deliverance
and joyful reunion with his father demonstrate the loving
attentiveness of God for those with faith who persevere. (Genesis
46:1-7,28-30)

Most of us are unlikely to be put to such drastic tests of faith as
we hear with this Joseph, but we all have little tests of faith,
sometimes many times in a day. It is then that we can lean on our
faith and trust in a loving God. To do so we need the firm foundation
of faith. Faith is a gift, our most precious jewel! As with any gifts
it can be ignored, or accepted with a loving spirit. With grace and
our cooperation through prayer, study and attentiveness this faith
can grow and deepen. Unlike other gifts our faith expands the more we
share it with others. How are we doing with our faith?
