A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Today's Gospel gives us an extraordinary look at how Jesus responds to the
plotting of his enemies. It is an example that perhaps we should examine and
imitate. He does not become all the more clever, all the more vocal, all the
more defensive. Instead, He withdraws. I am sure some wished He would have
been more assertive. Even now when the just are ridiculed, the defenseless
mistreated and His beloved Church maligned, many yearn for God to prevail
over his enemies.
We are instructed, instead, that Jesus, withdrew. However, He doesn't
withdraw like you or I might. He doesn't stop doing good in order to save
himself or court the favor of his enemies. He just becomes more sweet, more
docile, more patient, more low profile. He knew that in the end the power of
the wicked would be broken. Do we not know the same?
Dearest Lord,
Help us, for our enemies surround us.
Send us your Spirit so that we may be more like you:
not contending, not crying out,
then maybe the Father might say of us as He said of you,
"This is my loved one in whom I delight."
