A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
No sign will be given but that of the prophet Jonah.
Jonah the Prophet was sent to the Ninevites to warn them of the
coming doom. Jesus, the Son of God, was sent to humanity to tell them
of the all-encompassing love of God. But this message also came with
a warning: the Children of Nineveh -- pagans, gentiles, unbelievers,
who listened to Jonah -- will rise up and cry out against this
present generation. And woe to those who comprise that generation.
The sign of Jonah -- lying in the belly of the Earth for three days,
and then rising to complete his mission. Jesus fulfilled everything
in His death and His resurrection. When He uttered the words "it is
accomplished" on The Cross, it truly was accomplished.
God will not give us a sign. He has given us signs and more signs all
through the history of salvation. In the rising of the sun is a sign
of God's love. In the circulation of the stars at night, is a sign of
the love of God. Do not ask for a sign. Embrace all the signs of
God's tender love for us. He is a father who embraces each of us as
though we were the only child He had.
