A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Some of us remember the movie "The Great Escape." Enjoyable and
incredible as it was, it still cannot match the greatest escape of
all time, the Israelites' escape from their slavery in Egypt. This
event still rings in the minds and hearts of all who seek freedom. It
was this biblical miracle of God's intervention that gave hope to
black slaves in the heart of our American South. Their songs, their
writings, their groanings to the Lord for deliverance were all
couched in the demands of Moses to Pharaoh: "Let my people go!" And
before that, the forefathers and foremothers of our beloved country
declared in their diaries and letters that their journey to the New
World was an "errand into the wilderness", similar to the wanderings
of the Hebrews in the desert.
In our present-day journey to heaven, we can do no better than to let
these images of ancient Israel flow into our thoughts and prayers,
our aspirations and longings. We are indeed travellers in a cultural
and moral desert, and the Promised Land seems all the more an object
of longing -- if only we can trust that life-giving water flows from
the Rock and will sustain our weakness, and fight our battles until
we reach the other shore.
