A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Today we read about the parable of the fish net which reminds us that
the coming of the Kingdom will include the final judgment in which
the good and bad will be separated and receive their fitting reward
or punishment. Jesus went about teaching the will of God in parables.
He encouraged the people when He told them every scribe who is
learned in the reign of God is like the head of a household who can
bring in from his storeroom both the new and the old. (Mt13:52) The
challenge to the scribe is not lost on us today. Those who
prayerfully desire to know and obey the will of God, guided by the
Holy Spirit have no need to fear the final judgment. We have the
gifts of wisdom and discernment to help us determine the many new and
old things that we encounter each day, just as the scribe had to know
what to cherish and use, and what to throw away.
The question becomes not "old is good" or "new is bad" but, what will
lead us to holiness, love of God and the building up of our church in
this world of ours!
