A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
"Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, but whoever humbles himself
shall be exalted." Matthew 23:12 (Douay-Rheims)
Very often the Book of Ruth is quoted at wedding ceremonies. I'm sure
you have heard: "Wherever you go, I shall go, wherever you live, so
shall I live, your people will be my people and your God will be my
God too." Until I heard a wonderful sermon on the Book of Ruth, I,
like many, erroneously attributed the words to a new bride and
groom's pledge of love. It was quite an eye-opener for me to learn
that a daughter-in-law was speaking them with respect to her
mother-in-law! At first I was a little disappointed. What formally
seemed a beautiful pledge of married love became instead a
daughter-in-law's sacrifice. God wasn't disappointed. He was so
pleased with Ruth's humble unsolicited sacrifice that He rewarded her
and her descendants in an extraordinary way.
"See how the Lord blesses those who fear him." (today's Responsorial)
>From Ruth came Obed, from Obed came Jesse, from Jesse came David, and
from the lineage of David came the Savior of all humanity, Jesus
Christ the Lord!
