A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
"All the ends of the earth, have seen the power of God!" is the
beginning line of a powerful hymn that was taken from Psalm 98.
Peter saw the power! He wasn't ready to fish any more that early
morning; he was tired and hungry and wanted to stay on shore. But, he
trusted Jesus and did as He asked. Embarrassed with his unexpected
and overwhelming catch, Simon fell at the knees of Jesus as he
witnessed the power of God.
Almost as amazing was Paul's message to the people of Colossae. Paul
had heard that the Colossians were living in the love of the spirit
of God. Then he told them that he had been praying for them
unceasingly, that through Jesus Christ we all have redemption, the
forgiveness of our sins. What a wonderful thrilling moment for both
of these communities. We all love to hear that someone has been
praying for us, we all try to trust in our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ as the early Christians did.
Mindful of our weaknesses, we always must continue to strive towards
attaining perfection. However being human, we also must focus on
Jesus' word to Simon: "Do not be afraid." (Lk 5:10). We can dwell on
our sins feeling guilty and unworthy, thinking that Jesus could not
possibly forgive us. But He wants us to know that He has already
atoned every sin we have ever committed, as He beckons us towards the
healing sacrament of Reconciliation.
Jesus sent Simon Peter and his companions out into the world to be
His future missionaries. What does he want to do with you? Send you
forth as a peaceful person, shepherding the oppressed, the ill, the
incarcerated? Does He not want you to be a better spouse, a better
parent, a more faithful friend? Whatever His will is for you, place
your trust in His love and go forth as Peter and his companions did,
to witness to the world.
Help us Lord
to become more like you
in everything we do. Amen!
