A Reflection from Holy Scripture . . .
With delight I rejoice in the Lord!
Today we celebrate Mary's birthday. (Happy Birthday, Mary!)
All that comes to my mind is Mary's words to Elizabeth: "My Soul rejoices in
my God, my spirit proclaims the Greatness of the Lord; Holy is his Name."
Of all the saints, no one has greater cause for rejoicing; after all, she
bore Jesus into the world. Stop! She will be the first to tell us she is not
the only one to bear Jesus into the world. She could only bear Him once,
after all, and we are given the joyous opportunity to bear Him again and
again. And that too, is cause for HER to rejoice; all Mary ever wants to do
is make Jesus known to us, to bring Him to us, to lead us to His saving
grace.
Mary rejoices any time we turn our eyes and hearts to Jesus, and "forget"
about her. When Elizabeth tried to shower adulation and praise on her,
Mary's response was "I take great delight in the Lord, I'm of no great
consequence. It is His faithfulness to His word that we are celebrating."
And she's right, you know.
Holy Mary,
Lead us to Jesus,
reveal Him to us,
so that we in turn may reveal Him to others.
Thank you for saying "Yes!"
Inspire us to do the same.
