A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

The Book of Psalms is the "prayer book" of the Old Testament.
Although written so very long ago, the Psalms echo the prayer of
creation in every age. They contain prayers of praise, thanksgiving
and petition and are eloquent in the manner in which they suit all
kinds human circumstances.

The timelessness of Scripture reflects in part their sacred origin
and purpose. They speak to us about the universal condition of man
and his need for God. They also give testimony to God's interest in
mankind and the way He desires to intervene, correct, heal, save and
comfort.

I urge someone who might be longing to begin a habit of daily
scripture reading to start by reading the Responsorial Psalm each
day. They are short, musical in their tempo, poetic in the richness
of their words. You will find that in time they may become
incorporated into your own language and begin to be your own response
to occurrences that happen in your life.

Today is one of my favorites. When I happen to be mysteriously and
miraculously saved from something, be it little or large, I find
myself not thinking that I have missed something by the "skin of my
teeth," but often say aloud (sometimes for others to hear), "My life
like a bird has escaped the snare of the fowler."

How wonderful it is to have the holy words of Sacred Scripture as
part of your language; to realize that God is ever near to those who
love Him and even to those who don't.

Let us the pray for the grace to have Sacred Scripture in our hearts
and on our lips.

Blessed be the Lord who did not give us
               a prey to their teeth.
We have been rescued like a bird
               from the fowlers' snare;
Broken was the snare and we were freed.
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
who made heaven and earth." Ps 124:6-8
