A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
For whoever are led by the Spirit of God,
they are the sons of God. - Romans 8:14
Over the past several weeks, and again for another week or so, we
have been hearing readings from Paul's Letter to the Romans. This is
at once one of the most daunting of Paul's letters -- worthy of
commentary that runs to thousands of pages. Martin Luther, Karl
Barth, and Jean Calvin, are only a few of the people who have spent
thousands of words plumbing the mysteries of Romans -- and at the
same time one of the most encouraging. Paul constantly reminds us
throughout the letter of our heritage. Our heritage is not of the
flesh, but we are progeny of the Spirit through the death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Again we are reminded of what this means. We do not have to live in
slavery to sin. We do not have to obey every stray impulse or
thought. We do not have to give in to every temptation. We are moved
by the Spirit, and therefore we are Children of God. As Children of
God we have the rare privilege of calling the Creator and Sustainer
of the Universe "Abba." Roughly speaking we are entitled to call "He
Who Is", the "Ancient of Days", the "Lord of Life" and "All", we are
entitled to call Him "Papa." Not just Father, daunting and distant,
but Papa -- our loving, close, intimate, all-embracing Father.
And that privilege entitles us to live in the warmth of His embrace.
A warmth so desperately needed when we're hurting or frightened or
sad. How often have we cradled our own children and rocked them to
sleep or to calmness? So, we are permitted to rock safe in our
Father's arms. Nothing here may harm us, because He calls us His own.
Praise be to God, Master of All, Daddy!
