A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
On the necessity of praying always and not losing heart.
When taken as a whole, today's three scriptures bring us the lesson
of God's Divine Providence and the prayerful, trusting attitude that
God's beloved must harbor within their hearts and souls. The Book of
Wisdom reminds us of the opening of the Red Sea. We should remember
that the Jews were then a people who had great trust in the Lord --
and God rewarded their faithfulness and trust.
In today's Gospel, Jesus shows us that the Father delights in hearing
from his children frequently. What father doesn't want to hear from
his children and respond to their questions and requests? But, does
the Father shower his blessing on his sinful children? I don't think
so -- no more than an earthly father would respond with rewards to a
naughty child.
Shall we have enduring faith in God's providence? Shall we avail
ourselves of the multitude of graces that God ardently desires to
send us through the sacraments and prayer? In these tumultuous times,
shall we have trust in the God who desires to save us from eternal
perdition? Shall we prove our love of God by generous outpouring of
love upon neighbor and stranger?
Jesus asks us today: "When the Son of Man comes, will he find, do you
think, faith on earth?" (Lk 18:8)
