A Reflection from Holy Scripture . . .
The readings for the day might be summed up with the words
"perspective" and "priorities." Mid-November, a month during which we
turn special attention to our relationship with the persons who have
pre-deceased us, is an ideal time to refocus on these concepts.
Wisdom 13:3 discusses how we are tempted at times to worship the
little gods in our lives, our money, talents, works, but that "the
author of beauty made all those things". That awesome statement
immediately puts everything back into proper perspective.
The gospel of Luke, chapter 17, reminds us that Christ can come at
any time and that there will be no time to scurry around to tie up
the loose ends, the unfinished spiritual business in our lives. The
two readings together remind us how precious each moment really is.
Each moment is a spiritual gift awaiting our unique creativity.
It is also so refreshing to realize that "Holy Mother Church" reaches
out through the liturgy with these reminders. Our human frailties are
always with us. As with any mother, the Church is there to guide us.
It is up to us to listen and respond!
