A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

The example of Eleazar in today's first reading, has the power of an
incredible example, not only for the youth of that time and place,
and not only for the elders of that time and place, but for us of
this time and place. How incredible is the power of courage,
nobility, and loyalty to one's vows that transcends all time. It can
give new spirit and determination to those who are thousands of years
removed, for those who have never seen or known the real life figures
of these saints, whether of the Old Testament or of the New.

Doesn't this spur us on to make sacrifices that we think are not
noticed in our own day, in the hope that our example will still have
power with the next generation, whether of our family, or of our
parish, or for those who would falter and defect in faith, were it
not for the memory of what we were and what we did in the short span
allotted to us in our mortal life?
