A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Who's the greatest?
Jesus is asked to resolve a huge question. Who's the greatest?
Who's the best? Who will get the best seats at the banquet in the
kingdom of heaven?
His answer - as always a surprise - not the greatest warrior, not the
wealthiest man, not the most intelligent nor the most influential.
No, the person who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven is the one
who can accept a child as a child. The person who sees within the
child the image of Jesus Christ, will sit at the head of the banquet
table.
Jesus was saying something so radical that it couldn't possibly sink
in. You won't be judged by how well you fight, how much you earn, how
much you are admired, how much you can think. You will be judged by
how much you love, by how gentle you are. Does a little child feel
at home in your presence? Good, then also will Jesus.
That's His message to us. We need to strip away our own ideas of
accomplishment and put on Christ's. We need to humble ourselves to
the service even of a child and we will become great in the Kingdom
of heaven. Gentleness and love, as always, are the watchwords of the
Great Master.
