A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Today's First Reading from the Book of the Prophet Daniel gives a
fascinating account of the ability of one who is conformed to the
mind and heart and will of God, and that of another who seeks God in
pleasure and earthen treasures.
The one who does not hearken to what God commands is fearful - he
sees the ominous-appearing sign and yet seems unwilling to
acknowledge that his behavior has warranted it. Instead, he seeks the
interpretation of a holy man, wishing, we might imagine, that he
might just be overreacting and not in any danger from the wrath of a
mightier power.
That, to me, is what is strange - that those who wantonly refuse to
surrender to the sovereignty of God still experience a moment of
terror when the awful truth of their sinful ways come to light. Could
it be that this moment of terror is in fact a sign of God's grace - a
signal event meant to shatter all pretenses and get to the heart of
what really matters? It is a question worth pondering; a possible
manifestation of God's mercy - worthy of consideration.
For our part let us pray that we might not be found wanting in God's
sight. If perhaps we are; may we be blessed with the grace of our own
moment of terror providing us with the incentive to repent and seek
the Lord with all our heart, and mind and will and strength.
O Lord, help me to be among those who can read the handwriting on the
wall.
