A Reflection from Holy Scripture . . .
The readings of the day focus on our call to discipleship with the
example of the apostle Andrew, a fisherman, whose feast we celebrate
today. Christ promises that he will make Andrew a "fisher of men."
(Matthew 4:19)
In Romans 10:13-14, St. Paul points out that "whoever shall call upon
the name of the Lord shall be saved" but adds "how then shall they
call on Him in whom they have not believed"?
Christ with His power and ability might have chosen to teach all
people Himself, but He determined that the Good News be carried on
from generation to generation through us, His followers. He elevates
us by letting us share in this mission. St. Paul states "How
beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, of
them that bring glad tidings of good things." (Romans 10:15)
When our days on earth are numbered and if we have the opportunity in
the Catholic tradition to receive the sacrament of the sick, the
priest will anoint our hands, lips and feet. It is a brief but
beautiful sacrament. May those lips frequently have spoken of Christ,
those hands been lifted often in prayer and those feet walked until
tired to the aid of my brother and sister in need. Then we have been
true carriers of the Good News, as was the apostle Andrew.
