A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Today's gospel is a short one; but how relevant for us today! Jesus
warns us to be on guard, to protect our spirits from the ways of the
world. He names three things for us to be wary of: indulgences,
drunkenness and worldly cares. Who of us is not consumed by one or
more of these distractions! These distractions which distance us from
the spirit of Jesus, and which lead us to sin.

However, we shouldn't react in fear to these words. We should not
judge and condemn ourselves and others for being involved in such
activities but recognise the need for God's saving love in our lives
to bring balance and true peace to our minds and hearts. Our human
makeup is fraught with tendencies to addictions which bring despair.
Our hope is Jesus. Let us look first to Jesus and then we will see a
growing dissociation from those things that create disharmony in our
spirit.

Heal us Jesus, with your saving love
that we may proclaim your Word with zeal,
growing in union with you and all your saints.
               Amen.
