A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Over the Christmas holidays, I had the opportunity to spend some time
in Ireland with my uncle who is a parish priest in Manchester in the
UK. I always enjoy our chats as they range from discussing our
favourite football team: Manchester United!, to discussing elements
of our Catholic faith. This time around we discussed the power and
influence of the unseen over the material world....

In today's first reading, John reminds us that "...no one who is born
of God commits sin..." (1 John 5:18) We may look at our lives and see
evidence to the contrary. So what do we do? Whether we act like God's
children is a question we face everyday of our lives. It starts with
the unseen: an intention, a choice to do good or evil during the
course of the day, a decision to act in accordance with God's law of
love -- or not. When we don't act in love, we act in accordance with
laws of the world which do not recognise God -- we become children of
the world.

Today, at the start of this year, let us recognise the power our God
has given us in the gift of choice. He has given us the choice to
love, to grow in deeper union with Him. As part of our new year's
resolutions, let us endeavour to choose and decide responsibly,
relying on God's grace and the power of the Holy Spirit to
strengthen, protect and guide us on our journey.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
