Title: Meditation: Tuesday, January 15, 2002
The Catholic Calendar for Tuesday, January 15, 2002
The First Week in Ordinary Time
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
1 Samuel 1:9-20
1 Samuel 2:1,4-8
Mark 1:21-28
A Reflection on Scripture from Christmas Mass during the day:
"He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the Scribes."
(Mk 1:22)
Jesus is a source of wonders to the people around him. First they marvel
because He doesn't "hem and haw." He doesn't beat around the bush and He
doesn't "nuance" everything He has to say. He speaks the truth (because
He is Truth itself and cannot do otherwise) and He speaks it clearly.
The scribes were educated men, men of the world. They knew the law was
"too hard" for ordinary people, and yet they flexed it for those who had
means and enforced it ruthlessly on those who did not. They were able to
find loopholes and exceptions to nearly every rule. Jesus told the
people to do as the scribes taught but not to do as the scribes did. But
here was a Man who taught -- and lived as He taught. Not only do they
see a great teacher, but they see a great man whom the devils flee.
A second wonder: so soon after the Christmas season we are taken back to
those magnificent words of Handel's Messiah, straight from Isaiah: "And
His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, The Mighty God, The
Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."
So, do you feel unschooled, unworthy, and un-knowledgeable? Good! Then
humility will set you on the right road to the right Teacher, Jesus
Christ. From Him you can learn all that you need to know on Earth. There
is not a single shred of mortal wisdom that is worth anything compared
to the wonders of His Wisdom. And His Wisdom is the world's foolishness.
Remember the great saints, like Francis of Assisi, a fool for God,
learned at the feet of the Master.
So next time you have a few minutes, join Mary at the Master's feet. Sit
down with your bible and open it up. Listen to the Lord speak. And pray
for the strength and the courage to act upon what you learn. For when
you really open up and start to listen, you really will learn!
