The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Isaiah 49:3,5-6
    Psalm 40:2,7-10
    1 Corinthians 1:1-3
    John 1:29-34

A Reflection on today's Scripture:

The images of brides, bridegrooms and weddings in today's gospel and
first readings, tells us something very wonderful about our God's
love for us.

In spite of the many broken and unhappy marriages we may have
witnessed, we still have in our hearts a picture of the kind of love
that the perfect bride and bridegroom should have for one another. It
is a love that takes our breath away and gives us eyes only for our
beloved. That is how God loves us. We have been likened to his bride
and He, the bridegroom, waits for us with joyful expectation.

How can it be that God could love us so much that he chooses us to be
his bride?  Even with all our faults, he thinks we are more beautiful
than any story-book bride ever imagined.

The best part if it all is that His love for us does not grow old or
tired. He doesn't wake up disappointed or become bored with us.
Instead He keeps on loving, courting and delighting in us.

         Dearest Lord,
Let me become more worthy to be your bride.
Let me watch my tongue and guard all my ways
so that I don't do anything
that would make you sorry that you have chosen me.
                  Amen.
