Title: Meditation: Saturday, January 19, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Saturday, January 19, 2002
    First Week in Ordinary Time

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    1 Samuel 9:1-4,17-19;10:1
    Psalm 21:2-7
    Mark 2:13-17

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

In the first reading, Samuel is told by the Lord that Saul is the
"this man reign over my people." Samuel then poured oil over his
head, kissed him and stated, "Behold the man, of whom I spoke to
thee, this man shall reign over my people....the Lord hath anointed
thee to be prince over his inheritance, and thou shalt deliver his
people out of the hands of their enemies." (1 Samuel 9:17-19,10:1a)
Likewise in St. Mark's gospel we hear of Christ calling forth Levi,
the son of Alphaeus, to follow Him, and he did. (Mark 2:13-14)

The scriptures are so clear about Christ reaching into peoples' lives
and asking them to walk with Him. Sometimes in our own lives it does
not initially seem that clear. Time and prayer is needed to discern
our respective vocations. What is clear for each of us as Christians
however is that we have each been called to a unique and very special
relationship with Christ. By our baptism and confirmation, we too,
like Saul, have been made a priestly people. We have been anointed
and invited so intimately to participate in the kingdom of God as
adopted sons and daughters. What an invitation!...and the price was
already paid by the blood of Christ on the cross. Saul was kissed by
Samuel as he was to step into his princely role. For us, Christ
willingly gave His life on the cross! What greater sign of love is
needed! May we step forth each day with this trust and assurance!
