The Third Week in Ordinary Time

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    2 Samuel 6:12-15,17-19
    Psalm 24:7-10
    Mark 3:31-35

A reflection on today's Scripture

"Who are my mother and my brethren?" Mark 3:35

Who is the brother of Jesus? The brother of Jesus, as we are told
today, is anyone who hears and does the will of God. And this only
makes sense. Jesus is indirectly referring here to the fact that He
is the Son of God. To be a member of the family, one must respect the
Head of the family: the Father.

When we hear and obey God's will we are truly behaving as children of
God. As children of God we are the step-brothers and sisters of
Jesus. God has taken us into His family. And this is wonderful to
think of. Think of the very best family you know. It may be your own
family, perhaps that of a friend. Think of every good thing about
that family, and magnify it. Magnify it to the point where Jesus is
your sibling and God is your Father. There are no lost tempers, no
impatience, no endless nagging and chiding, no painful meaningless
ordeals of misunderstanding.

We are God's family. Thus we are all brothers and sisters. So let's
make a special effort to be Big Brothers and Sisters. Let's stand up
for someone today. Don't listen to gossip about someone. Don't
contribute to rumor. Offer someone a big smile or a helping hand.
Lend an ear. It's easy to be a big brother or sister if we invite God
into our hearts first.
