The Catholic Calendar for Wednesday, January 30, 2002
The Third Week in Ordinary Time

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
   2 Samuel 7:4-17
   Psalm 89:4-5,27-30
   Mark 4:1-20

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

In today's first reading, God rebukes David who is carried away with rising
glory and prosperity of Jerusalem and tells God that he will build the Lord
a proper house. Through the prophet Nathan, God says, "Who do you think you
are, David? You're going to build me a house, are you? Well, let me tell you
something! You're not going to build me a house. I'm going to build you a
house!" What food for thought there is here. When we plan our projects, our
strategies, our future, we must take care always to consult the Lord. And do
it before we begin, not afterwards. Otherwise we may be going against God's
will and designs. His Will is always the best. We need to do a lot of
thinking, too, about the house that God has already built for us -- His
Church, with detailed instructions as to how we are to behave in it, and who
are the important guests in that house -- the poor, the marginalized, the
alien, and the stranger. Enough, Lord! I'll put my plans on hold right now,
and seek your approval for any further building.
