    1 Chronicles 29:10-12
    Mark 6:7-13

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

In today's First Reading from the Book of Kings we hear King David's
deathbed exhortation to his son Solomon. David uses the poignancy of a
death bed speech to encourage his son to follow all the Lord's statutes,
commands, decrees and ordinances.

The reading gives us the opportunity to reflect on what things we
consider important to say, not necessarily as part of a final
dissertation, but as an ongoing proclamation of what is laudable and
worthy of our efforts. It also provides an occasion to recognize how
well we have let God be the rightful and sovereign Lord of our lives.

Failure to follow all God's commands becomes a deterrent to God's grace
which is always directed toward our welfare and salvation. Embracing the
legitimacy of God's right to our obedience not only makes it easier for
us to be humble and obedient but provides a milieu that allows others to
learn how to submit out of love.

If we, recognizing that any rightful authority we may have is given as
an extension of God's authority, we will exercise it as He does -- with
love and mercy.

For parents it will mean relying for direction, not on society's
rendition of legitimate authority, but on the authenticity of authority
given to you by God. This will illuminate the serious nature of
parenting, but, will also empower it with the grace required for so
august a task.

May all of us then, imitate King David and instruct those we love about
the absolute necessity of the primacy of God over us. May we allow Him
to be our Supreme All. By our instruction and good example may others
learn that following all the Lord's statutes, commands, decrees and
ordinances is not burdensome, but the joyful response of a loving and
willing heart.
