The Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Isaiah 58:7-10
Psalm 112:4-9
1 Corinthians 2:1-5
Matthew 5:13-16
A Reflection on today's Scripture:
In Morning Prayer of the Divine Office this weekend, Psalm 8 asks us:
compared to God's creation of the moon and the stars, what is mere
man, that God should care for him? Early this morning before sunrise,
I quietly stood outside watching the full moon majestically setting
on the distant northwest horizon, its opalescent light reflecting
rhythmically from the bottoms of high cirrus clouds. I felt like the
very smallest of creatures, before such a spectacular display of
God's beauty and might! And so small we are, indeed!
Yet, in this Sunday's gospel, Jesus tells us that we are the "light
of the world"! Wow! In spite of our insignificance, our weakness,
our size, by the Atonement of Jesus on the Cross we have been given
the wide open gate necessary for salvation -- for becoming holy, for
being kind to our neighbors. But it's not automatic. No, we must
constantly fend off evil and persistently seek holiness -- taking the
high road, not the low. To do this, we must avail ourselves of the
holy sacraments and sacramentals of the Church. And having humbly
done that, one day we might unwittingly reflect the light of Christ
before the world, into someone's receptive heart.
Jesus said:
I am the light of the world.
He who follows me does not walk in the darkness,
but will have the light of life. (John 8:12)
