Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Deuteronomy 30:15-20
    Psalm 1:1-4,6
    Luke 9:22-25

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Today's First Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy contains a phrase
which illuminates what really is involved in all sanctity of life
issues, namely, choosing life over death.

To be certain, the issues are complex and require not only attention,
but prayerful attention. That is why consistent conformity to God's will
as revealed through Holy Scripture and it's interpretation by our Holy
Catholic and Apostolic Church is so crucial. Without some authoritative
and respected method of trying to resolve ethical issues, we are
vulnerable to the agenda of others and perhaps grave error.

The Word of God provides just that -- a body of authoritative and
respectable norms for mankind to follow. It is not the agenda of a
mortal person, but the plan of our beneficent Creator who's only
interest is our welfare and salvation.

Think about it. If a mother can't be trusted to defend the child in her
womb, can anyone be trusted? Given a certain set of circumstances we are
all subject to making horrendous death-dealing decisions, even for those
we are expected to love the most. That is why we must have some
unalterable norms -- some ways of behaving that cannot be manipulated by
either the well-meaning or the evil.

Let us then place all our trust where it won't be bought, or sold, or
traded, where it won't one day be honored and the next day disregarded,
where it is not a commodity. Let us place our trust in the unsearchable,
unchangeable, unalterable Word of God.

"I have set before you, life and death, the blessing and the curse.
Choose life then," the Holy Book says, "that you and your descendants
may live."  Deuteronomy 30:19
