Title: Meditation: Wednesday, February 20, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Wednesday, February 20, 2002
Wednesday of the First Week of Lent

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Jonah 3:1-10
    Psalm 51:3-4,12-13,18-19
    Luke 11:29-32

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

If the writer of the book of Jonah could be so exasperated and angry,
how frustrated Almighty God must be! Isn't anyone listening? How
logical to be frustrated? To refuse the Word of God is to choose
death.

God's Word brings a fulfillment to every human dream, every human
desire. Why, then, refuse to listen?

The irony of it all is that the cruelest, most wicked people in the
East, the Assyrians, were the ones to accept the message. They went
overboard with repentance, even demanding fasting from their animals!
We must never judge who is worthy and who is not worthy of salvation.
Our enemies may be more pleasing in God's sight than we are.

Even God repented, and did not carry out what He had intended. There
is always hope in His mercy, if only we turn to Him with all our
hearts.
