Title: FW: Meditation: Friday, February 22, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Friday, February 22, 2002
    The Chair of St. Peter

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    1 Peter 5:1-4
    Psalm 23:1-6
    Matthew 16:13-19

A Reflection on today's Holy Scripture . . .

When Jesus asked the apostles "But who do you say that I am?" Peter
answered "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." (Mt 16:15,16)
How would you respond if the same question were asked of you?

Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Peter, our first pope, recognized
the Messiah! Peter became the first shepherd of the early Church, when
Jesus said: "Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church,
and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." (Mt 16:18). We have
an unbroken line of shepherds who have guided and led the Church to this
very day. We are blessed that John Paul II is the vicar of Christ today
who occupies the Chair of Peter.

Do we realize that we are all called to be shepherds to one another,
leading and guiding by our word and example? During this Lenten season
we have many opportunities to look within, to see how we can improve our
own shepherding to those with whom we live, work and play in our daily
lives.

         O Lord,
Please protect our Holy Father, John Paul II.
Bring all your people of faith together
through his guidance, example, prayers and sacrifices.
              Amen!
