Title: Meditation: Wednesday, February 27, 2002
The Catholic Calendar for Wednesday, February 27, 2002
Wednesday of the Second Week of Lent
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Jeremiah 18:18-20
Psalm 31:5-6,14-16
Matthew 20:17-28
A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
I'm sure Jeremiah never thought anyone would publish his private
diary. But that's what happened when the sacred writer added to
Jeremiah's public message, a private complaint, drawing down fire and
brimstone on the religious leaders who were trying to do away with
him. But that's how Jeremiah felt, and God must have felt it belonged
in His Revelation! How Jeremiah must have struggled to separate his
own hurt feelings from his prayer for God to punish their sin.
And, later on, James and John must have been thoroughly ashamed of
their scheming and their mother's scheming to get them special honors
in the kingdom. If we're honest in facing our real motives, don't we
sometimes seek our own will rather than God's will? Lent is a good
time to remember, that if we pray for the good of others over our own
good, we can't go wrong. God will keep us "on track."
