Title: Meditation: Thursday, February 28, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Thursday, February 28, 2002
Thursday of the Second Week of Lent

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Jeremiah 17:5-10
    Psalm 1:1-4,6
    Luke 16:19-31

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Today's readings illustrate the striking contrast between how God
esteems those who love and hope in Him and follow His ways and commands,
from those who rely on their own cleverness and ingenuity - delighting
instead in self gratification while others in their presence perish.

At first the contrast can seem reassuring, especially if I think I am
one who delights in God's laws. Closer examination reveals that though
professing to be a follower of Christ, I often fail miserably in the
love and consideration I expend on others.

It is almost horrifying to think that an abyss could ever exist between
God and us. Yet, when we fail to respond to the needs of those in our
midst, just such an abyss exists.

May this Lenten time of grace help us to more readily recognize the
needs of others and give to them not just bits and pieces of our love
and attention - not scraps and leftovers that fall from our bounty - but
even more: perhaps all that we have.

You said Lord that you know how tortuous the human heart is.
Lord, change my heart this time, this Lent;
make my heart like unto yours. Amen.
