A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Last week when I was writing the meditation for last Thursday, I thought
of how sad it was that those who knew and saw manifestations of the
Lord's great power grew cold and indifferent to Him. I vaguely recalled
a few verses from Holy Scripture that demonstrated the foolishness of
our preference for things of this world instead of the things of God,
but I couldn't get all the words straight or remember where in Holy
Scripture to find them.

Today as I sit and meditate on the readings for today, I find them right
before my eyes, the very words and passage I was thinking about. Do you
think this is just some kind of coincidence, or does the Lord really
speak to us? Does the Word of God fall haphazardly into the middle of
our lives, or do we dream up some significance that is beyond what is
written? I am inclined to say no to all those questions - knowing with a
knowing that defies human understanding - believing that God really does
speak to our hearts if we would only incline them to listen.

Holy Scripture says the Israelites exchanged the glory given to them by
God, for an image of a grass-eating bull. That passage makes me wonder
what I have preferred to God and the glory He has promised. I see all
too painfully that it wasn't just the Israelites who succumbed to the
trickery and treachery of the devil, but also me.

Let us pray that God may give us the grace to recognize our own
vulnerability for making similar stupid mistakes. Armed with such
knowledge may we whole heartedly turn to the Lord placing all our hope
and desire for happiness on the only One who can save us.

O Lord, Not on the image of a grass-eating bull or any other worthless
thing, but on the reality of Your Christ hanging on the cross, may my
heart be fixed and my love be centered. Amen
