Tuesday of Holy Week
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Isaiah 49:1-6
Psalm 71:1-6,15,17
John 13:21-33,36-38
A reflection on today's Scripture . . . .
"One of you will betray me." (see John 13:21)
We are a long way through Lent. We move through these last days of
Holy Week toward the wonderful celebration of the Triduum and we are
reminded of that daily.
Today we hear Jesus tell the apostles that one of them will betray
Him. And of course, as the story is completed, we know that more than
one -- in fact, all of them betray Him. Some cannot stay awake and
pray. One turns Him over to the authorities. One denies Him three
times. One doesn't believe in His resurrection. Two do not recognize
Him in His risen body. On and on and on. And yet Jesus trusted His
Church to such as these. And the Church survived.
Yes. One will betray Him. In fact, it probably would have been better
said that "Each one of you will betray Me." Some to His death, some
afterwards. So too, with us. We each betray Him a little when we fail
to do as He has asked. We each abandon Him when we do not spend a
little time in prayer. We each could be a little more faithful.
The Church is made of broken people; but it should come as a great
consolation that it always has been. From the beginning broken people
have made up the Church and even run the Church. Yet, it has endured
for two thousand years and Jesus promises us that "The gates of Hell
shall not prevail against it." So, let us accept our brokenness and
offer our failures and betrayals for Jesus to make them and us whole.
