Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
   Isaiah 50:5-9
   Psalm 69:8-10,21-22,31,33-34
   Matthew 26:14-25

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Where on earth do those imprisoned for their faith ever get the
strength to resist their torturers for days -- and weeks -- and
months -- even to the death?

Today's reading from the 50th chapter of Isaiah show us how God can
keep the soul strong in peace. The victim sets his face like flint,
we are told. By far, the worst blow to the heart that can sap energy
and will to survive, however, is the element of betrayal. Betrayal by
one who was trusted and loved more than others -- Judas.

This sacred day, on the verge of the three holiest days of the year,
sets the tone for us, for we are pierced to the heart this day by the
realization that the betrayal of Judas is no different than our many
personal betrayals of Jesus through sin -- sin of commission and sin
of omission -- and our sins of indifference and cowardice. We have
wounded the One who loves us more than any other lover. May we spend
this day in humbly stirring up in ourselves deep contrition and new
resolve to repair the damage of our betrayals.
