The Catholic Calendar for Tuesday, April 2, 2002 The Paschal Octave - Easter Tuesday Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: Acts 2:36-41 Psalm 33:4-5,18-20,22 John 20:11-18 A reflection on today's Scripture . . . . St. Peter's words in today's first scripture are as relevant today as they were the moment he spoke them over two thousand years ago: "Save yourselves from this perverse generation." (Acts 2:40) Peter was speaking to the Jews following the crucifixion of Jesus and was telling them that Jesus who they killed was indeed Lord and Messiah. Shaken by the possibility that what Peter was saying was true, they asked him: "What shall we do?" Very simply, Peter said they must be baptized and reform. The world isn't much different now is it, from when Peter spoke those words? This generation too, has gone astray and continues to crucify the Lord, the Messiah, the very Son of God. What would Peter say to us? I am certain his answer would be the same, we must reform and then we would receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is this Holy Spirit that will save us from this wicked generation. It will be God's Spirit, with its gifts that will teach us what we should do and give us the courage to do it. Dear Holy Spirit, I contemplate the great sacrifice that we have just celebrated and realize that it was my sinfulness and the sinfulness of this generation and all humanity that crucified Jesus. Help me, now that I have asked for forgiveness and want to reform my life, to be open to the Holy Spirit. Grant me the grace that I may use the gifts of your spirit to help change a sinful world. Like Peter, let me, in my own way, bring Christ to this misled and pitiful generation. Like Peter and the other disciples who knew and saw and loved Jesus, let me be ready to die, as a faithful witness for our faith. Let me proclaim with every thought, word, and deed that Jesus Christ the risen Lord is my Savior and my God. Then too, may the example and gift of my own life help those accept the message of this blessed season. - Donna Raye Nelson, ocds YOU CAN HELP to evangelize the Word of God: Please recommend our website to your friends and Catholic webmasters.
