Title: Meditation: for Monday, April 1, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Monday, April 1, 2002
The Paschal Octave - Easter Monday

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Acts 2:14,22-33
    Psalm 16:1-2,5,7-11
    Matthew 28:8-15

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord, will be saved. (Acts 2:21)

Today's readings reveal the fulfillment of Christ's promise, "I will not
leave you orphaned." How frightening it must have been to His disciples
to witness the death of their beloved teacher. They could not imagine
how He would reach beyond the grave to lead and guide them in
proclaiming God's kingdom to the world as they had been instructed to
do.

In dying, Christ conquered not only sin but also death; for while He put
our sin to death in His own human body, He also put Death to death in
rising from the grave to a new and glorified life. As sinners we were
dead to God; but through faith in Christ our sins are forgiven and we
are restored to life in God. Jesus invites all to participate in His new
life through the Holy Spirit Whom He sent upon the Apostles to infuse
them with the love, truth, wisdom and strength required to proclaim to
the world its need for salvation and the means to gain it. The same Holy
Spirit that gave birth to the Church at Pentecost continues to keep her
alive to this day through us.

Each of us, in his own unique way, has an apostolate to fulfill. In our
human flesh we are to live in ways that make Christ known to this world.
The humblest task we do is made holy if it is impelled by the same
self-giving love that, in enduring the pain of the cross, conquered what
unnecessarily enslaves the human race and perpetuates its misery: sin
that leads to spiritual death.

         Merciful Christ,
help us to discern Your truth
and turn away from this world's lies.
Enable us live in a manner
that reflects Your pure light and love. Amen.
