Title: Meditation: Tuesday, April 9, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Tuesday, April 9, 2002
   The Second Week of Easter

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
   Acts 4:32-37
   Psalm 93:1-2,5
   John 3:7-15

A reflection on today's Scripture . . . .

The early Christians being of one heart and one mind, were an excellent
example for us, by their communal action of giving up their material
possessions. St. Paul wrote: "Not one of them said that anything he
possessed was his own, but they had all things in common."
(Acts 4:32)

Paul is holding up for us their example of detachment from material
things and vain excesses of this world. Centuries later, the Lord
continues to hold up to us saintly examples such as Francis of Assisi,
Mother Teresa, and many religious living according to their vows.

Shall we ignore God's desire for us in the various gospel writings and
the many examples given to us? Do we think that we are exempt from God's
charge, somehow or other? Do we think that the =spirit= of detachment
alone, is all that suffices? What does it profit a man if he gains the
whole world but loses his soul? Why do I possess unnecessary baubles?

Lord, help me to be freed of these distractions of the world, both in
mind and in actuality, that I may worthily receive the fullness of the
Holy Spirit within me, and bring the good news of salvation to all the
world, without reservation. Amen, Amen!
