    John 6:16-21

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Fear is an emotion all of us have experienced at some time. Today's
readings lead up to the topic of fear.

In the first reading from Acts we hear of the ordination of seven
deacons. (Acts 6:1-7) One can almost feel the excitement and
enthusiasm among the disciples in the early church. This excitement
can change however to fear.

St. John points out in the gospel what happened to the apostles, and
what can happen to us when they went off separately from Christ. They
were rowing across a lake. It got dark and a strong wind came up.
(John 6:16-18) We too can go off on our own "paddling our own canoe"
instead of following the will of God. When the winds of stress begin
to blow around us we too can become fearful.

The apostles saw Christ walking toward them on the lake and they were
afraid. Christ said to them "It is I. Be not afraid." (John 6:20)

The readings of today give reassurance that Christ knows us
intimately, our actions, our concerns and even how we are feeling. He
is still saying to us today, centuries later, through the written
word, "It is I. Be not afraid."
