Title: Meditation: Tuesday, April 16, 2002
The Catholic Calendar for Tuesday, April 16, 2002
The Third Week of Easter
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Acts 7:51--8:1
Psalm 31:3-4,6-8,17,21
John 6:30-35
A reflection on today's Scripture . . . .
Lord, give us always this bread (John 6:34)
>From the crucial, undeniable sixth chapter of John, we hear this
summary of our faith. We hear at this moment the undeniable, central
truth we live each day. This is the truth we celebrate 364 days of
the year and which we can receive 365 days of the year if we so
choose. (Good Friday is a service with preconsecrated Eucharist, so
while there is no Mass, still, Jesus is present there).
How can we deny this food that feeds us? How can we place ourselves
in the position of starving? Can you believe that some people
actually view attendance at Mass on Sunday as an obligation?
Attendance at any Mass is a feast, a celebration, a time in which we
receive the only food that matters -- the only food that can feed us
here and now, the food of heaven, the bread of angels.
"I am the Bread of Life," Jesus says. This is the Bread of eternal
Life, the Bread that feeds the spirit, the Bread that is the
foundation of the Church and the Bread that stands against the gates
of Hell. Let us take every opportunity to receive it, every
opportunity to adore it, every opportunity to make its power, beauty,
and goodness known to all!
