The Catholic Calendar for Wednesday, April 17, 2002 Third Week of Easter Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: Acts 8:1-8 Psalm 66:1-7 John 6:35-40 A Reflection on Today's Scripture: How God brings good out of evil! Even as the mourners bury the body of Stephen, the simple folk of Jerusalem flee to the country -- and Philip the Deacon goes to preach to more willing ears in Samaria. What a turnabout! The sophisticated, educated city of Jerusalem rejects the source and font of their wisdom and power, while the Samaritans eagerly embrace the Word. And so, Stephen's death catapults the Gospel into unlikely places. The seed takes root and bears fruit in unlikely soil. Just as Jesus had foretold, He will reject no one from the Kingdom of His Father, provided their hearts are open and their souls athirst for justice. Truly the message and the messengers are astounding. Are we part of His band? - Msgr.
