Title: Meditation: Sunday, April 21, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Sunday, April 21, 2002
    The Fourth Sunday of Easter
    Good Shepherd Sunday

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Acts 2:14,36-41
    Psalm 23:1-6
    1 Peter 2:20-25
    John 10:1-10

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Careful reading of scripture for the Fourth Sunday of Easter, also
known as Good Shepherd Sunday, contains practically all the essential
information that one might need for seeking God, holiness and eternal
life. We would do well to read and meditate at great length upon
these rich words of wisdom given us from almighty God.

First, we're called to have a change of heart, forsaking our old
habits of selfishness and sin, to seek generosity and love towards
all. Secondly, we're called to imitate Christ, suffering with
patience the mockery we'll receive because of any good that we might
do. Common sense tells us we can't do this on our own, but that we
must place all our hope and trust in the Good Shepherd.

We must constantly renew our efforts to disengage our hearts and
desires from the useless things and attractions of this world. Let us
place all our hope and desire on that which has merit in eternity,
guided by Jesus the Divine Shepherd of our souls. This time of joy
and purgation on earth is truly a short time. Let us be determined to
spend it productively for the eternal goal before us. My resolve: to
thoughtfully read this Sunday's scriptures in advance of attending
Mass.
