   St. Fidelis

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
   Acts 12:24--13:5
   Psalm 67:2-3,5-6,8
   John 12:44-50

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

How very mysterious is the power of community--family--comrades. How
frightened Barnabas and Saul must have been to be sent! They had seen the
fate of Stephen. Would it be theirs, as well? But, like soldiers in battle,
there is an uncanny power in loyalty to one's comrades, an abhorrence of
letting them down. Armed with this mysterious force of love for their
comrade and love for this Jesus who has captured their hearts, they catapult
themselves into the unknown. In their abasement of self and their trust in
the Spirit, they are channels of salvation to the multitudes.

These are frightening times for the Church and for the world. Critically
dependent on our generosity of spirit, so many depend on us for hope, for
adjusting of moral values, for a restoration of confidence in the power of
the Paschal Mystery. Let us resolve to keep our eyes on Jesus, and launch
courageously into the uncertain future, bringing Christ's certainty and
salvation. It all depends on the measure of our love."
