Title: Meditation: Sunday, April 28, 2002
The Catholic Calendar for Sunday, April 28, 2002
The Fifth Sunday of Easter
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Acts 6:1-7
Psalm 33:1-2,4-5,18-19
1 Peter 2:4-9
John 14:1-12
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Today's Gospel is incredibly powerful as we learn more about our own
lack of faith. The apostle Thomas asks Jesus how we are to know the way
to the Father. Jesus replies, "I am the way, and the truth, and the
life. No one comes to the Father but through me." (John 14:6)
Today, just as in the time of Jesus, faith is the key. Certainly, some
had faith; yet, many others did not. The person who possesses faith will
also perform many good works that have merit before the Father and they
will produce good fruit. Just as it was difficult for many Jews to
believe in Jesus as the Messiah because they lacked faith, so also in
our times, many find it difficult to be touched by faith because of the
cloud of materialism spreading over the earth.
Defending ourselves against this evil trick of the devil is not easy,
because in great part we're being continually and subliminally charged
with the lure of worldly things by the media. Physically and
psychologically, we're gradually being drawn away from the basics of
reality, kindness to our neighbor and faith in God - as if such
principles didn't matter anymore.
Our only recourse is to shun the unnecessary stuff of materialism,
return to prayer, love God through concern for our neighbor, and to
humbly ask God for His gift of faith. We pray that through the mercy and
grace of God, faith will return and grow within souls everywhere.
