The Catholic Calendar for Saturday, May 4, 2002 Fifth Week of Easter Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: Acts 16:1-10 Psalm 100:1-3,5 John 15:18-21 A Reflection on Today's Scripture: "If the world hates you, know that it hated me before you." (John 15:18) These are the strong words Jesus preaches to us today in the Gospel. Many of us, in the course of our daily lives, don't experience this hate of the world. We can practice our Christian virtues without threat, comfortable in the knowledge that many of those we meet are familiar with the basic message of Christ. While perhaps not totally committed to practicing the faith, can appreciate the appeal of its message. In this 'lukewarmness', we meet little confrontation. However, the more we grow as Christians, the greater our need to live in accordance with the Holy Spirit and the more dilemmas we face in choosing the path of Christ or the path of the world. As we grow in Christian truth, the more we are called to take the road less travelled in standing up for the truth of Christ in every aspect of life. It is then that we face confrontation and perhaps hatred when we meet those who feel threatened by our beliefs, and by the recognition of something Greater than themselves leading humanity on the path of life. In this testing time on earth, let us recognise our dependence on Jesus for all that is good and lasting. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to inflame us with the desire to live the Gospel and to grant us the grace and humility to treat success, failure, happiness, sadness, illness and health as gifts from God, all leading us on the path of salvation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. - Cliodhna Doyle ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) YOU CAN HELP to evangelize the Word of God: Please recommend our website to your friends and Catholic webmasters.
