Title: Meditation: Sunday, May 5, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Sunday, May 5, 2002
   The Sixth Sunday of Easter

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
   Acts 8:5-8,14-17
   Psalm 66:1-7,16,20
   1 Peter 3:15-18
   John 14:15-21

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Because we will be celebrating the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven this
coming Thursday, our scriptures are now focussed on that event and its
significance for us. We learn especially, that Jesus promises that after
He leaves us, God the Father will leave us the Paraclete - the Holy
Spirit - the Spirit of truth. (see John 14:16-17)

Yes, the Father will send us the Holy Spirit, if we love Jesus and
obey the simple commands He has given us. Indeed, we can see the
outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon those who are striving to love the
Lord. We have seen sinners set free and the human spirit raised in the
Lord rather than enslaved by sin and depravity. Yes, we see pockets of
God's light amid a worldwide blanket of sin and oppression.

Our call today is to renew our personal conversion - wholly and
completely to the Lord. We are called to study scripture daily, to be
with God at all times, especially in daily prayer and at Mass, to let
the light of Christ shine forth through us to our neighbor in healing
acts of love and forgiveness. We are called to be on fire with love of
God!

If anyone loves me, he will keep my word,
and my Father will love him,
and we will come to him....
 (John 14:23)
