The Catholic Calendar for Tuesday, May 7, 2002 The Sixth Week of Easter Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: Acts 16:22-34 Psalm 138:1-3,7-8 John 16:5-11 A reflection on today's Scripture . . . . "And now I am going to Him who sent me." John 16:5) What is one of the greatest sorrows anyone can endure? Loss of a loved one. What is one of the worst fears? Anticipation of the loss. And here Jesus is telling the disciples clearly that He will be leaving them. Can you sit in that room and hear what Jesus is saying? Can you imagine what it means? Feel your heart sink within you. But then He says something deeply mysterious: "It is expedient for you that I leave." Why? Because He goes to prepare a place and because the Comforter, the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit, will not descend if Jesus doesn't ascend. This Councilor will convict the world on three counts. That Holy Spirit is with us today, warning of sin, telling of Jesus, and praying for us to the Father. We can listen and hear Him, or we can ignore Him. The choice is ours. But consider the great cost at which we have the Holy Spirit, and the choice is no longer a choice. For those who love Jesus it becomes an imperative. We must seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit because He alone knows clearly the way to Jesus and thus to the Father. As we approach Pentecost let us remember the importance of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Let's ask Him to enlighten us and to pray for us before God the Father. Trust Him, He is the same as the Father and the Son, He cannot lead us astray. - JuandelaCruz T. O. Carm.
