Title: Meditation: Sunday, May 12, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Sunday, May 12, 2002
    The Seventh Sunday of Easter

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Acts 1:12-14
    Psalm 27:1,4,7-8
    1 Peter 4:13-16
    John 17:1-11

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Now the liturgical year helps us to recall those nine days that passed
between Ascension and Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the
apostles. This was the Church's first novena - a time of intense and
earnest prayer - beseeching the Father to send the Paraclete.

In today's gospel from St. John, we hear the words of Jesus at the Last
Supper: "Father, the hour has come! Glorify thy Son, that he may give
everlasting life...." (Jn 17:2)  Clearly, Jesus had a mandate from the
Father to effect reconciliation and perfection. But the road would not
be easy. Peter warns: "Rejoice, in so far as you are partakers of the
sufferings of Christ....Let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a
thief, or a slanderer, or..." (1 Peter 4:13-16)

We must learn to be on guard for the many ways Satan can set us up, even
for mortal sin. Just when we think we've "come clean" through the
Sacrament of Reconciliation, the Evil One preys upon our many
inclinations to weakness - such as pride, lust, envy, gluttony and all
the many other subtle weaknesses that we don't even want to think about.
So, let us join with the apostles and all the saints during these next
few days, to beseech God to send His Holy Spirit upon us, that we too,
may be filled with the strength and joy that comes from the gifts of the
Holy Spirit.
