Title: Meditation: Thursday, May 16, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Thursday, May 16, 2002
    The Seventh Week of Easter

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Acts 22:30;23:6-11
    Psalm 16:1-2,5,7-11
    John 17:20-26

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

In today's Gospel Jesus teaches an intriguing thing; namely, that He has
given the Apostles the glory given to Him by the Father so that they may
be one in Him as He is in the Father.

This idea of being "one in Jesus" sounds nice, but in truth involves far
more than the utterance of those simple words. To be one in Jesus
requires such complete assimilation of everything Jesus taught that we
are no longer recognizable as individuals, but so completely resemble
Jesus that we can say: "We are one." Our behavior and attitudes become
so close to those of Jesus that the Father no longer sees us, but
instead His Beloved Son to whom He gave all power and glory.

In a funny way its like the Father has been tricked into thinking that
we are His beloved yet it is no trick for the Father knows full well,
and yet so loves Jesus that anyone who takes on His likeness, is loved
with the same degree and intensity.

Let us pray for the grace to respond more fully to such great love and
to never doubt the genuineness of the Father's affection and concern for
us.
