Title: Meditation: Sunday, June 2, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Sunday, June 2, 2002
The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi)

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Deuteronomy 8:2-3,14-16
    Psalm 147:12-15,19-20
    1 Corinthians 10:16-17
    John 6:51-58

A reflection on today's Scripture:

On this Solemn feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, we commemorate a
fundamental belief of our faith: the command by Jesus that we must eat
His sacred Body and drink His sacred Blood if we are to have everlasting
life. This was strongly stated to the Jews by Jesus. Naturally, in view
of their laws based on the Book of Leviticus, they found it repulsive
and disgusting.

There seems to be a great conflict between what pollsters claim
Catholics believe and what they actually do. It is claimed that the
majority do not believe that the bread and wine becomes the
transubstantiated Body and Blood of Jesus at the Mass. Yet the vast
majority of the congregation receives the Precious Body and Blood of
Jesus at Mass. We pray that all believe, for if anyone should receive
unworthily they will call down God's condemnation upon themselves by
such a grievous sin.

Let us beseech God in prayer that our hearts may be opened to the light
of the Holy Spirit, that we may let God's grace flood in, that we may
thirst for the Body and Blood of Christ and be healed by His presence
within us.
