The Catholic Calendar for Tuesday, June 11, 2002 The Tenth Week in Ordinary Time St. Barnabas, apostle Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: Acts 11:21-26; 13:1-3 Psalm 98:1-6 Matthew 5:13-16 A reflection on today's Scripture . . . . Give without charge as you have received without charge. (see Matt.10:8) In Jesus Christ we have received the greatest gift of all time -- the one true entrance into eternal life. We have done nothing to merit this gift. It was given without cost, and so, as with many things that cost us nothing, we do not prize it as we should. Things that are free are "worth what they cost." That is what our materialistic society would like us to believe. But look at it again. How much does love cost? What does the smile of a small child cost? What do the dawn and the sunset cost? Nothing! These things, all of them, come from God's hand freely. And we are blessed by them. We are encouraged as latter-day disciples and apostles to generously give to others as we have received. Give without asking payment, without expecting, without seeking. Do not look for so much as a thank you -- give generously and your life will be transformed. Learning to give teaches us to become like Jesus. When we learn to give, we become more Christlike, and the world becomes more Christ-filled. - JuandelaCruz, T.O.Carm.
