Title: Meditation: Wednesday, June 12, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Wednesday, June 12, 2002
    Tenth Week in Ordinary Time

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    1 Kings 18:20-39
    Psalm 16:1-2,4-5,8,11
    Matthew 5:17-19

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Times were desperate in Israel when Elijah challenged the prophets of
Baal to a showdown. It was now or never, and Elijah stood to lose his
life if God did not come to his aid. And God did come with power and
drama! Certainly these are desperate times. In so many ways, it seems
that the power of Satan prevails; and, even among believers, there is
scandal, confusion, and a feeling that we're on the losing side. What
better time than now to put our total trust in the Lord, knowing
that, when we cry to Him humbly, admitting our sinfulness, and with
hearts full of love, He will hear and answer our prayer. The gods of
money, sensuality, and earthly power cannot withstand the God of love
and justice.
